Head of Engineering

What the job involves

• Define architecture, tooling, technology and infrastructure needs aligned with best practices
• Build collaborative working relationship with Product/stakeholders to deliver projects and anticipate future technical needs
• Hands-on involvement with coding on day to day basis for initial development as tech team scales up
• Review the design and code of others and take necessary corrective actions if needed
• Nurture a high performing team to deliver OKRs and great customer experiences whilst achieving their development goals
• Support the adoption of best practices for Agile, code quality, test coverage, and secure coding
• Provide leadership and guidance, including troubleshooting and problem solving
• Balance our ability to deliver at pace whilst building a sustainable tech stack. This blog will give you an idea of how we work.

Who you are

Must-have requirements

• A collaborative all-rounder who takes accountability and supports others
• 2+ years in a leadership role including experience managing and mentoring software engineers, technical delivery management and working with stakeholders to meet business goals
• 3+ years experience working as a hands-on software developer
• Curious and humble; you ask questions and are open to new ideas
• Comfortable with Agile methodology (CI/CD, we use GitHub actions and AWS Copilot) and a fast-paced environment making decisions with imperfect information
• Knowledge of our key technologies - TypeScript, React, Node.js, Postgres, Docker. Please note you do not need to be in expert in all of these provided you are keen to learn!
• Care about what you do, Sunsave’s mission, the code you write, the products you ship

Desirable requirements 

• Some experience with GraphQL, RESTful APIs, AWS (RDS Postgres, Lambda, SNS etc.), Cloudwatch and Sentry
• Start-up experience
