Energy Management Fellow

Position Overview & Description

This Energy Management Fellow position is supported through an innovative partnership between Puget Sound Energy and Strategic Energy Innovations. Aimed at addressing the myriad of energy and environmental sustainability initiatives, this Fellowship model presents a distinct opportunity to shape energy efficiencies and sustainability practices across sectors and institutional roles. 

At the core of this program is developing the next generation of thinkers and doers to help address sustainability in education settings. Roles in educational sustainability require a distinct combination of aptitudes including project management, data analytics, and community development. In addition to Climate Corps training and a professional certificate, this position offers professional development opportunities designed to help provide the range of skills necessary to execute sustainable programs or practices. 

The candidate will work on pressing climate and sustainability problems and be relied upon to work toward replicable solutions. A customized mix of on-the-job training, field work and class time will help the Fellow hone marketable skills and draw important professional connections while making a marked difference in the community. 

Specific work at the University of Puget Sound will include building out an energy management program for our portfolio of buildings, including monitoring energy use and efficiency, updating databases such as Energy Star Portfolio Manager, working with Facilities staff to ensure full compliance with WA Clean Building Performance Standard, and creating energy efficiency outreach programs and materials. 

Responsibilities

Projects may include, but not be limited to: 

Energy Management: 

• Energy and utility audits
• Monitoring and gathering data from facilities, and supporting Energy Star Portfolio Manager Benchmarking efforts

Research and Data Analysis: 

• Perform research and analysis, develop performance metrics, and monitor and evaluate energy conservation program progress toward efficiency goals. 
• Support utility rebate review and proposal development for system upgrades. 
• Assist with reporting for PSE and TPU CSEM programs and campus AASHE STARS update, including energy usage reports and GHG emissions inventory for Scope 1 & Scope 2 emissions

Project Management: 

• Support initiatives such as coordinating investment in EV charging stations.
• Support compliance with WA Clean Buildings Standard, including attending cohort meetings. 
• Support departmental grant applications 

Campus Engagement: 

• Develop behavior-change actions and campaigns to support energy conservation on campus among various audiences, including students, faculty, and staff. 
• Provide support for energy-related student capstone projects and research inquiries, including occasional presentations to classes. 
• Assist in developing infographics and communication items to support campus energy conservation campaigns. 

Desired Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering, energy systems, natural resources, sustainability, or other related field. 
• Upper-level coursework or capstone project experience in energy management, energy systems, technical data analysis, or engineering.
• Related experience in fields related to energy efficiency, renewable energy, energy management, and/or data analysis. 
• Ability to work independently and carry out assignments, make independent judgments and/or decisions, and discern when action at a higher level is required. 
• Must be able to effectively manage multiple projects and maintain an organized and well-communicated workflow. 
• A deep passion for sustainability, with the practical skills and abilities to affect change in complex systems. 
• Familiarity with an academic environment

This position will be located in Facilities Services, reporting to the Director of Sustainability. Facilities Services is responsible for the management, maintenance, and operation of all the university’s buildings and grounds as well as the physical development of the campus.
