ROLE TITLE: Head of Control Systems


REPORTING LINE: Reporting to the Technical Director

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW:

The Controls Systems Department oversees the development of our vessel flight control software and general control software, ensuring that all software developed is compliant whilst adhering to ATL’s software development processes.


THE ROLE:

The Head of Control Systems will lead a team of experts working on leading edge maritime technology. Working closely with the whole technical team, the Head of Control Systems will deliver innovative solutions for the control systems of Artemis Technologies eFoiler Technology.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES:

  • Lead the Control System Department by supporting technology roadmap creation, defining strategy and project planning.
  • Lead the development of functional briefs with the Technical Team.
  • Lead the engineering process of control laws and algorithms for various boat systems, including flight systems, propulsion control and energy management. 
  • Collaborate with the Compliance Engineer to obtain relevant certification for efoiler sales.
  • Support and participate in system validation/verification testing via SIL & HIL.
  • Ensure that all compliance and reporting requirements are met.
  • Effectively line manage the Control System Team.
  • Mentor the Control System team members.
  • Work collaboratively with other ATL functions.
  • Comply with ATL’s policies and procedures.
  • Contribute to shaping a culture that reflects ATL Values and Guiding Principles and enables ATL to achieve its goals.


PERSON SPECIFICATION:


Education/Qualifications and Experience:

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering or related field.
  • Candidates without the relevant qualification but have substantial relevant experience at the appropriate level will also be considered.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience working with control systems.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience managing and leading a Control Systems team.

 

Desirable:

  • Required experience demonstrated within the Motorsport, Aerospace or Maritime industry.


SKILLS:

Technical/Design skills.

  • Highly skilled in the MathWorks environment including Matlab, Simulink, Stateflow, Embedded Coder (ideally) and Matlab Coder.
  • Preferably, Technical skills related to:
    • Linear Control Systems
    • Battery Electric System Controls
    • Fault Tolerant Control Systems


Leadership and Management Skills

  • Ability to structure and build a strong performing department.
  • Ability to manage and motivate a team effectively.
  • Preferably, embedded control software skills, or alternatively, the ability to manage team members who hold such specialist skills.
  • Ability to manage highly complex design teams with multiple high achievers.


Commercial skills

  • Ability to understand the commercial/technical pressures and the commercial imperatives involved.


Problem solving skills

  • Ability to solve issues without guidance, source information required.


Communication skills

  • Good report writing skills – clear, concise and well structured.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.


Organising skills

  • Ability to estimate work effort for complex technical teams.


Teamworking:

  • Highly collaborative, with an ability to relate well to others, and build co-operative relationships.
