ChargeScape – Head of Policy

About ChargeScape

The U.S. is on track for 50% of all new vehicle sales in 2030 to be electric – but our power grid was not built to withstand this level of electricity demand, and charging remains a pain point for drivers. With over 80% of EV charging occurring at home, ChargeScape was formed by some of the world’s largest automakers (BMW, Ford, and Honda – with more joining soon) with the mission to enable everyone to access sustainable, affordable energy from a reliable power grid.

ChargeScape’s software platform serves as the connective tissue between EV drivers and power utilities, using cloud-based commands to schedule EV charging for the most grid-friendly, low-carbon hours all while putting money back in drivers’ wallets. We recently launched with a founding team of executives with over a decade of experience in EV charging software, and are looking to make one of our first hires for a critical leadership position.

The role

The Head of Policy will report to ChargeScape’s VP Business Development and will be responsible for leading ChargeScape’s regulatory engagement and policymaking efforts supporting vehicle-grid integration. Electric utilities design EV charging programs for their customers in line with legislative and regulatory directives from their state public utilities commission. A successful Head of Policy will be able to develop and execute on a regulatory strategy that builds alliances, influences public utilities commissioners and other stakeholders, and results in cost-effective EV charging programs for our utility clients and their ratepayers.

Core responsibilities include:

  • Developing and executing ChargeScape’s policy and regulatory strategy for the USA, in line with the long-term goals of the broader ChargeScape business development team;
  • Identifying policy and industry bodies with objectives that are aligned with ChargeScape’s own, and representing ChargeScape within those bodies;
  • Building alliances with external stakeholders whose objectives are aligned with ChargeScape;
  • Tracking transport electrification and demand-side management dockets in priority US states, and drafting and submitting high-quality comments for state-level public utility commission proceedings;
  • Researching regulatory filings to support market and competitive intelligence;
  • Representing ChargeScape at industry conferences; and
  • Supporting the broader business development team to prepare for utility meetings by providing high-quality policy summaries and presentations.

The candidate

The ideal candidate has:

  • Experience working with state-level public utilities commissions;
  • Significant domain expertise in power grids, distributed energy resources, and/or electric vehicles;
  • Exceptional writing skills, with an ability to persuade using data and logic;
  • A high aptitude to think strategically and execute tactically; and
  • A strong attention to detail.

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in policy or regulatory affairs in the energy/utility industry;
  • Willingness to travel as needed; and
  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in law or social sciences (MPA or JD preferred).

The opportunity

We will be able to offer you:

  • A competitive salary and bonus, with total cash compensation of $150,000 - $200,000 per year;
  • A comprehensive benefits package including healthcare, 401(k) and unlimited PTO;
  • A flexible/hybrid work environment with regular company-wide offsites; and
  • The opportunity to shape ChargeScape’s business from the ground up.
