Job Description
Are you a College Student in a Mechanical Engineering Program and looking for a Co-Op placement to gain experience and knowledge in an Injection Moulded Plastics Manufacturing Facility? Look no further! We have an exciting opportunity for student who is familiar with Machining Process and machine Shop Procedures in our Barrie Manufacturing facility.

JOB PURPOSE
The incumbent’s engineering duties involve carrying out projects, segments of projects, tooling modifications, design of new parts and/or tooling, creating technical drawings, part testing, developing manufacturing processes and/or work instructions, supporting new product launches and duties assigned by the Design Supervisor or the Tooling and Design Specialists.
Hours Of Work: 8:00AM-4:15PM
Pay Rate: $22.00/hour
Principle accountabilities
New Product Design
- Create part designs using inputs from the Innovation team.
- Use 3D CAD to design and evaluate new products for conformance to required standards i.e. CSA, NSF, UL, etc.
- Produce or acquire prototypes to evaluate the function and manufacturability of new products.
- Create detail drawings for manufacturing, certification, and QA purposes.
- Conduct Design-Review meetings of new products with team and other support personnel. (Final design is to be signed off by managers)
- Assist in resolving critical dimensions and inspection requirements.
- work with interdisciplinary teams from the beginning of product design to the product launch
New Mould/Tooling Acquisition and Commissioning
- Inspect/evaluate mould when it arrives in house
- Issue test notice
- Work with processing department and QA to witness/evaluate the test.
- Work with the Mould Supervisor to facilitate any mould modifications required.
Automation, Assembly, and Jig/Fixture Design
- Work with production personnel and QA to assess requirements for assembly jigs fixtures and automation.
- Design jigs and fixtures using 3D CAD program.
- Create detailed drawings for outside or internal machine shops.
- Work with the Mould Shop personnel or outside suppliers to get components manufactured.
- Assemble and fix the jigs and fixtures.
- Train the production trainers in the use of the jig and fixtures.
Mould/Tooling Modifications
- Use appropriate measuring instruments to reverse engineer various components. (micrometers, Vernier’s, CMM, etc.)
- Create detailed sketches and drawings for use by inside and outside machine shops.
- Issue Tooling requests
- Issue Mould Shop work orders
Knowledge & Skill Requirements
- Ability to operate 3D CAD systems (SolidWorks, AutoCAD experience an asset).
- Effective in a team environment.
- Ability to work independently
- Ability to establish and maintain good working relations with all contacts.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Strong computer skills with windows, Word, Excel, Database software, Office suites.
- Experience building and designing custom fixtures.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously bringing all to timely conclusions.
- Working towards Mechanical Engineering degree, diploma, or equivalent
- Familiar with machining processes and machine shop procedures and safety.
- Ability to prioritize multiple actions based on needs, importance and resources available to accomplish.
Machinery/equipment used
Computers, measuring equipment, optical comparator, periodic testing equipment
Working conditions
- Estimated that 90% of the time is an office position within the plant environment designing or handling personal duties.
- The remaining 10% is in the plant where typical mould shop or maintenance equipment is used for purposes or prototyping, reverse engineering, product/tool testing, or process development.
