About Piclo

Piclo is a venture backed online energy marketplace that is disrupting the way that electricity grids are run worldwide.

We are Europe’s leading independent marketplace for trading energy flexibility online. Energy flexibility, the ability for smart energy technology to help balance the grid and keep the lights on is an essential service to enable Net Zero carbon emissions.

Initially based in the UK, Piclo is quickly becoming the de facto standard for flexibility markets across the EU, with a number of high profile pilots being announced this year. With £4.7million backing from the Clean Growth Fund and Mott MacDonald Ventures, Piclo has the capital to rapidly grow and capture this very exciting opportunity.

The rapidly growing team (currently 30 FTEs, will be 45 by year end) is based on a hybrid working model, with an office in Shoreditch London. Our company's values are: be human, collaborate, keep things simple, be adaptable, be open & push boundaries. Our organisational principles reflect a desire to create a balance between providing strategic direction from management and enabling autonomous teams. We do our best to practice service leadership and strive to always consult with and incorporate opinions from the team before making decisions.

The role

We’re hiring a Chief Operating Officer to become a core member of the Executive team. You’ll have a key role in deciding the strategy and direction of Piclo. You’ll be tasked with bringing operational and financial excellence to the business, leveraging strategic insights to plan for the future and ensuring our culture remains embedded as we scale.

Your key objectives as COO over the next 18 months:

  • Fundraise: we’ll be raising our Series B with a view to close in Q4 2022. You’ll lead the fundraising process, working closely with the CEO and Head of Finance.
  • Work with the CCO and CEO to ensure the business is positioned to deliver against revenue targets.
  • Own the P&L - working with our Head of Finance to prepare budgets and forecasts, and providing guidance on them in relation to the strategic and operational plan for the company.
  • Planning the operational requirements for international expansion (initially across Europe).
  • Ownership of ISO requirements to ensure adoption of policies and embedding good practice across the business.
  • Implementing a clear operating system and operational cadence of the business and ensuring excellent communication across the business.
  • Implementing a strong foundation for rapid team expansion, ensuring we have all the building blocks needed to deliver an exceptional employee experience.
  • Preparing reports and attending board meetings and audit committees and building close relationships with board directors.

About you

Our ideal candidate meets many - but not necessarily all - of the below criteria:

  • You have relevant professional experience in strategic, financial and operational roles in early stage, high growth environments
  • You have been pivotal in raising venture capital before, have an excellent, in-depth understanding and high level of confidence in the fundraising process.
  • You have a strong financial background and understand what strategic financial management looks like for an early stage, venture funded, tech business.
  • You’re driven by metrics and goals, knowing how to set these and inspire others to be motivated by them.
  • You’ll be a strategist and planner, who can present a vision and plan with clarity.
  • You’re a strong communicator who can build relationships with teammates from different disciplines.
  • You understand and buy into Piclo’s values and organisational principles.

Also desirable:

  • Experience with B2B SaaS
  • Finance related qualifications

Executive team

You will be joining an Exec. team made up of:

  • CEO: an energy industry expert, who is always looking to the future of where the energy industry is headed. Holds the relationships with our customers, board and other stakeholders.
  • CTO: architect of Piclo’s proprietary technology. Very operationally minded and deeply involved in the development of the culture and organisational structure of the company.
  • Chief Product Officer (CPO): roadmap owner and cross functional glue between engineering, product, sales and customer delivery.
  • Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) [currently being hired]: defining and scaling the commercial strategy and processes to support that.

You’ll be responsible for and supported by the Operations team including the Head of Finance, who is responsible for overseeing our statutory accounts, management accounts, payroll, budgets and tax & filings, and our Operations Manager, who is highly people focused and delivers an excellent employee experience, and supports day to day operations.

What we can offer

This is a full-time role, Monday-Friday.

  • Competitive package, including share options and bonus.
  • Private Healthcare with Life Assurance.
  • High spec. office space in Shoreditch.
  • An annual allowance to spend on professional development, additional equipment, or your mental and physical wellbeing.
  • Join a strong and passionate team with a mission to decarbonise the world's energy systems.
