About this job

UPSIDE Foods is building novel cultivation systems to enable massive scalability of cell-based meat production. We are seeking an experienced mechanical engineer with both technical depth and creative vision to collaborate in the rapid ideation, design, fabrication, and testing of manufacturing equipment. The mechanical engineering team works with the bioprocess development team to define the system requirements and evaluate the performance of novel prototypes, all within the context of the overall company's near- and long-term goals. You should be comfortable using CAD programs to design components, explore concepts, and run analyses. There is a massive white space of engineering design ahead in this emerging field to be explored. We hope to find someone creative and enthusiastic, who enjoys hands-on work to be part of our growing team.

Duties include

• Designing parts in CAD (SolidWorks)
• Sending parts out for fabrication and coordinating with vendors
• Hands-on involvement in commissioning of systems
• Thermal, fluid, and structural analysis
• Finding novel and creative solutions to biological and mechanical problems
• Fabricating parts using in-house equipment (3D printer, laser cutter, drill press, etc.)
• Presenting your work to the larger team and explaining your ideas to people with different technical backgrounds

About you

• 5+ years of relevant work experience, including design, prototyping, manufacturing and testing of novel equipment
• BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering
• Proficient with CAD (SolidWorks preferred)
• Experience working with outside vendors and contractors
• Ability to estimate and provide scheduling for upcoming work
• Experience working on large machinery/systems
• Hands-on, prototyping experience
• Experience self-managing individual projects and working with a timeline in mind

Nice to have

• Experience with fluids system, plumbing design
• Experience working with cell culture
• Experience with computational fluid dynamics, finite element analysis, and thermal analysis software(s)
• Experience designing systems to meet ASME BPE or 3-a SSI standards.
