The Chief Economist serves as the primary resource within ReMA for information on recycled materials market trends, commodity prices, and the effects of economic conditions and policy changes on recycled materials. 


ReMA’s Economics Department is the premier research and data arm of the recycled materials industry. The role of the Chief Economist is to help increase understanding of policies and programs by providing intellectual leadership and analytical services to ReMA’s membership, staff, government officials and select stakeholders. Under the leadership of the Senior Vice President of Advocacy, the Chief Economist sets ReMA’s research and data analysis agenda and assists in the delivery of a high-quality advocacy program by advising leadership, staff and members on a wide range of policy issues. This role supports the association’s strategic goals by providing members with timely insights and by representing ReMA at industry events and in media engagements.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

  • Monitors recycled materials market trends and commodity prices.
  • Prepares weekly reports and analyses for ReMA’s publications, delivering accessible, data-informed insights to the      membership.
  • Interprets and forecasts trends in the recycled materials industry, providing guidance on economic issues affecting the      sector.
  • Advises ReMA leadership and staff on economic topics, helping to inform strategic decisions.
  • Creates reports, tables, and charts that clearly communicate complex data.
  • Responds to member and staff requests for in-depth analysis and answers to industry-related questions.
  • Serves as a spokesperson for ReMA, responds to media inquiries and provides industry insights.
  • Drafts content for ReMA’s annual commodities Yearbook and fact sheets.
  • Supports ReMA events such as the annual convention and Commodities Roundtable Forum by identifying and recruiting industry speakers.
  • Addresses commodity-specific or economic issues during ReMA events.
  • Represents ReMA and the recycled materials industry at conferences and meetings domestically and internationally.
  • Leads the production of ReMA’s annual industry economic benefits report, coordinating with consultants, staff, and members as appropriate.
  • Oversees benchmarking studies and surveys, managing the scope, execution, and presentation of findings.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Economics required; Master’s or Ph.D. preferred.
  • At least 10 years as the lead economist; experience in a commodity-dependent industry preferred.
  • Superior analytical, oral, and written communication skills. Ability to convey complex economics information into layman’sterms. 
  • Proven ability to work across departments and within deadlines.
  • Strong personal and professional ethics and conduct.

Working Conditions

  • Salary range for this position is between $155k - $180k. 
  • Some travel (up to 25% foreign and domestic) and public speaking will be required. General office work environment.
