About Electrified Thermal Solutions
Boilers, furnaces, and kilns are the engines of our industrial economy, providing heat to melt steel, form cement, and transform chemicals. But historically reaching this high-temperature heat required burning fossil fuels, making the industrial sector responsible for 25% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
Electrified Thermal Solutions has a simple and massive goal: to electrify industry.
To do this, we are building the Joule Hive™ thermal battery: an energy storage technology that converts and stores cheap, renewable electricity as high-temperature heat. Our vision is to mitigate gigatons of CO2 emissions per year by deploying the Joule Hive™ at every industrial furnace, turbine, boiler, and kiln.
We are grateful for the support from the US DOE ARPA-E, Massachusetts Clean Energy Center, Activate, National Science Foundation, Clean Energy Ventures, Starlight Ventures, and the Grantham Foundation.
About the Role
As a Lead Commissioning Engineer, you will lead the detailed planning and commissioning of the Joule Hive™ thermal battery (JHTB) Commercial Demonstration plant and subsequent products. This is largely a remote position with extensive (~ 60%) travel expectations, with travel either to the demonstration and future customer sites or, on occasion, to ETS headquarters in Medford, MA. On location, you will work with contractors, vendors, and site hosts to ensure the JHTBs are installed and commissioned as planned. You will report directly to the VP of Engineering.
What You’ll Do
- Lead development of commissioning philosophy, schedule, and procedures throughout the design process.
- Work with site hosts to evaluate system integration including mating interfaces, footprint, facility compatibility (power, enclosure, HVAC, etc.) and high-level economics of deployment.
- Translate and implement design and assembly process from ETS lab facilities into the field.
- Work with site host to implement any safety policies and procedures throughout the installation and commissioning phases to ensure a smooth and safe project.
- Lead commissioning and start-up of all systems within the JHTB in a logical and controlled manner.
- Develop and execute commissioning procedures and coordinate a team of technicians, operations personnel, other contractors, and vendor support personnel during installation and commissioning phases.
- Lead design of test plans to validate process control systems, instrumentation, and equipment.
- system handover and acceptance from the installation team, including system discipline walk-downs and punch list generation.
What You'll Bring
- Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or industrial engineering is preferred but not required.
- At least five years of experience commissioning energy and/or industrial systems.
- At least 2 years of experience developing and executing commissioning procedures for industrial systems be willing to travel ~60% of year.
- Ability to work in an outdoor plant/construction environment, including exposure to noise and varying temperatures and to be available for on-call support during plant startups and critical testing phases
- Organization & detail-orientation
- A collaborative, highly adaptable spirit, and a love of challenging assumptions.
What We Offer
- Competitive compensation package, including equity options
- Medical, Dental & Vision Insurance 401(k) with 4% matching
