The Systems Operations Engineering (SOE) Engineer primarily supports the Duke Energy Carolinas Energy Control Center functions. This position also supports the Reliability Coordinator function as defined by the North American Electric Reliability Council (NERC). This position develops various daily, weekly, and seasonal operating studies/reliability assessments for operations. This includes work necessary to comply with all applicable Reliability Standards for Bulk Electric Systems and Operating/Interconnection Agreements. In addition, the SOE team supports operations in internal and external technical groups.
Perform operational planning studies and reliability assessments--working with others in Systems Operations; Transmission System Planning; and counterparts with neighboring companies--participating in reliability and interconnection agreements
Develop real-time operations solutions on the transmission system, including development of operational procedures to change transmission system configuration or re-dispatch of generation to manage loading concerns
Support the resolution of operating issues with all stakeholders including generation entities, neighboring systems, and various load serving entities connected to the transmission system
Participate in pre/post-operating assessment studies of system performance
Provide emergency support during storms and operating emergencies
Support special studies as required for corporate planning purposes or in support of compliance administration programs for FERC and North American Electric Reliability Organization (NERC) requirements
Provide support of the Energy Management System by ensuring accuracy of the transmission network modeling and equipment ratings
Support ongoing Duke Energy and VACAR South compliance with FERC and NERC requirements including development and review of appropriate documentation
Support training activities for others in Systems Operations
Participate in various industry Electric Reliability Organization or Regional Entity working groups and/or groups associated with Reliability and Interconnection Agreements
Currently enrolled in a Bachelor of Science in Engineering at an ABET accredited institution with an anticipated graduation date by May 2025. Student must successfully complete and obtain their degree prior to their scheduled start date.
A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree
Bachelor of Science in Engineering obtained from an ABET accredited program, OR a master’s degree in Engineering in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering
Minimum of two (2) years of engineering experience
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering
Professional Engineer and/or NERC Certified Operator
Proficient in engineering theories and principles
Proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations
Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills
Proficient in principles of project management
Registered Professional Engineer (PE)
Experience in the utility industry
Hybrid – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite location. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to the designated Duke Energy facility.
Must maintain or have the ability acquire NERC Certification
Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or PE
A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree
