About this job
The sensory scientist or Sr. scientist is a key member of the F&P team (Formula and Product) team and will guide the overall meat/food product organoleptic research and development plan for the company.   The sensory scientist will guide and guide the company to deploy the appropriate technical and/or quantitative sensory techniques at the appropriate times and bring in outside support when needed.  The sensory scientist will serve as the subject matter expert for the company and be the key contact person for the company and collaborate with strategic partners to deliver short and long term key innovation priorities.  The sensory scientist would also serve as the product attribute expert and translate sensory insights to guide the project team in the decision making process to achieve the key results.

Duties Include

  • Provide sensory leadership and technical support for the company and serve as the key subject matter expert on red meat, poultry, and seafood organoleptic analysis
  • Applying scientific knowledge to design, plan, and execute research projects utilizing established and innovative procedures
  • Design and recommend new sensory testing methodologies to incorporate where needed to comprehend the sensory attributes of products of interest, spanning red meat, poultry and seafood
  • Develop and standardize sensory protocols to be used company-wide
  • Accurately and consistently records experimental methods, materials and results in electronic laboratory notebooks
  • Analyze data, evaluate results, form conclusions and implement/document process improvements, integrate previous and current results to determine next experimental steps and the impact of long-range project goals
  • Communicate sensory reports in a clear and concise manner to cross-functional teammates and the senior leadership team
  • Provide appropriate sensory trainings to the company and conduct descriptive analysis to standardize sensory language for the company 
  • Define sensory objective and strategy to support company wide short and long term innovation initiatives  
  • Stay connected with the industry and up-to-date on new scenery research techniques

About You

  • B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Food Science, Sensory Science, Animal Science, Meat Science or applicable industry experience in related areas
  • 5 to 10 years of experience working in the food manufacturing industry, preferably in further processed fresh and frozen meat products in both ready to eat and ready to cook categories with various protein species: beef, pork, poultry and seafood.
  • Extensive experience in identifying and applying of core sensory tools
  • Ability to design experiments to identify key flavor components in target products
  • Ability to design new sensory techniques and tools to evaluate key sensory attributes
  • Ability to design and recommend validation/shelf life studies to establish shelf life for new food materials/products
  • Strong ability to utilize statistic programs to analyze and interpret data, communicate and provide recommendations as needed
  • Strong ability to bridge the gaps and provide sensory insights, leveraging both existing and new knowledge and customer research
  • A self-starter with high curiosity, highly motivated by discovering and learning new technologies
  • Ability to build, plan and recommend sensory strategies  to support company-wide short and long range projects
  • Ability to provide sensory trainings to the company and identify and recommend the critical sensory tools
  • Experienced with working with flavor houses in developing key flavors that are critical to deliver target product flavor profile
  • Must be a good human who enjoys learning and contributing alongside other good humans
