Job Description

We’re making zero carbon happen

We’re OVO Group, a big family of companies united by a single vision: to get to zero carbon, fast.

We call this Plan Zero – and it shows how we’ll be fighting the climate crisis and transforming the way people use energy over the next decade. To do this, we need the sharpest minds. Are you up for the challenge?

Do great green things with OVO Energy

So much has changed since we launched in 2009.  Our goal remains the same though: make energy cheaper, greener, and simpler. Just as it was on day one.

Everyone belongs at OVO

Our aim is to build a diverse and inclusive movement: teams of brilliant people, with unique talents, skills, passions, and experiences.

We encourage everyone to join us, whatever your gender identity, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, life experience, or background. So please come as you are – we can’t wait to meet you.

Where in the world of OVO will I be working?

The Market Design and Incubation team is a strategic insight and incubation hub sitting within the Commercial area. Following the energy crisis, in a time of unprecedented change in the energy industry, the function works closely with our folks across OVO Group’s businesses to provide expert analysis and insight on a range of energy industry and emerging policy areas. It drives value across the Group by identifying emerging risks and opportunities and incubating novel approaches to addressing them.

The team is embedded within the Commercial function to ensure strong ties with the commercial operation of the Retail business, but reaches beyond the immediate team to support the wider business. It acts a critical friend to any area of the Group responding to changes in the energy landscape, and as a strategic advisor to senior leadership and business planning. The function primarily considers the longer term -  looking over the 2-5 year horizon, and maintaining a vision of the energy sector over the next 10 years.

What will I be doing?

Within the wider function, the Market Design and Insight team are responsible for understanding emerging energy sector risks and opportunities. We will maintain an open “library” of relevant literature and insights, and build novel models, analysis or research to explore key topics of energy industry change. We use this deep industry insight to inform strategic goals and, where appropriate, publish papers, blogs or responses to policy engagement to establish OVO as a leading voice in the energy transition and a trusted partner for consumers

The Strategic Market Design Analyst will be responsible for market monitoring and horizon scanning. This includes:

  • Owning the development of deep critical thinking / analysis into complex and wide-ranging energy topics (e.g. the future of the energy retail market)
  • Proactive identification of risks and opportunities from emerging energy industry trends and changes.
  • Working with internal resource or third parties to deliver novel modelling and research to explore key topics and develop thought leading analysis.
  • Market monitoring - reading reports, attending webinars etc to maintain a live view of key market developments and rapid assessment of the impact on OVO’s current and future business models. A focus on UK energy market, but with an appraisal of other markets in the UK, and international markets.
  • Regular reporting to the business on key industry insights
  • Building and maintaining the “central view” of expected market developments, key dates and opportunities for engagement, risks and opportunities.

Is this the job for me?

It's important that you have:

  • Strong and broad communication skills, including the ability to synthesise technical and non-technical literature
  • Strong prioritisation skills with a flexible, “find a way” mentality
  • A commercial and strategic approach able to interpret policy and research publications into business impacts. Strong attention to detail with expert, technical knowledge in the energy industry, with the ability to translate this to high-level, strategic policy (and vice versa).

Ideally you'll have:

  • Deep understanding of regulatory environment in UK Energy and working knowledge of other markets
  • Good collaborator management, forming strong relationships internally and externally.A great teammater, open communicator and collaborator.
  • Passionate about the setting the future agenda for the energy industry
